THROUGH THE LENS

You challenged me Gary
with your quiet ways
and what appeared to be
amazing confidence
but maybe it was just the drugs
masking your fears and hurts

you had this incredible ability
to capture the world
through the lens
and you shared it with me
mostly it was all beauty
but after a while
I knew you were crumbly
and fragile

Even though my friends
nicknamed you Darth Vader
with your long black leather coat
and air of arrogance
I knew that which set you apart
from all of us
was somewhere far away
captured in the music and the lens

you still hold the record
for the largest and most amazing
CD collection I have ever seen
one of the first people I ever knew
that owned CD's

And the music and the pictures
still play in my mind
you wouldn't commit
and then came the night you fought for me
but I turned my back and walked away

I have thought since then
as I look to the mountains
where I now live
the mountains you shared
through your eyes,
your pictures, your heart

what if I hadn't walked away
Would you still be here?
